Introduction
The Need and urge for science and technology made Vysya college to establish Department of Biotechnology in the year 2003.At the out set the department offered under graduation in biotechnology.
In the year 2006 the department upgraded itself to P.G department and offered M.Sc., in biotechnology. 60 students were enrolled for M.Sc biotechnology in the first batch of our PG department.
The Primary Objectives of the Department

  • The prime focus of the department is to impart value added education and to promote affirmative scientific temper in young minds.
  • Transfer of recent and contemporary scientific technologies from labs to attain sustained development of society.
  • The department is regularly organizing training programmes and industrial visits to increase the practical skills of the students in the various fields of biotechnology.

Courses offered by the Department
The department offers both under graduation and post graduation programme in Biotechnology. UG and PG Biotechnology programmes offered by the Department are a comprehensive mix of up - to- date and advanced study of relevant scientific principles and theory.
The department is regularly organizing symposiums, seminars and guest lectures to highlights areas of current research and practical applications in the field of biotechnology.

Lab Facilities
Biotechnology is a multi disciplinary, application oriented study which includes various advanced biological techniques. Department has separate, well organized laboratories with unique functional areas for Under Graduate and Post Graduate. Laboratories are well equipped with modern and sophisticated instruments to meet the current needs.
Lab is designed in such way to have an organized work space for

  • Enzyme Technology
  • Microbial Technology
  • Animal Tissue Culture

The lab is equipped with advanced instruments like thermal cycler, gel documentation system with gel analysis software, UV-visible spectrophotometer, Phase contrast microscope, Image projection system, Visible spectrophotometer, Stereo Microscope, -200 C Deep Freezer, etc.

Fund Received

  • Received a fund of RS 50,000 from TNSCST (Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology) to organized two scientific awareness programme for the rural farmers & self help group members and for the school students of Salem District.
  • The programme for rural farmers and self help group members was conducted on 22nd and 23rd March of 2010.
  • The programme for school students was conducted on 30th June of 2010.
